Lance has one so I got one of my own and have to say it's a great buy. Someone else here said they got it too and it helped. At the price point you can't go wrong.
I've never used that personally. Just the backroads mapbook or trial and error.
You can also use Google satellite to scope out some points of interest and line then up with your mapbook. Alternatively, you could use Gaia and it has the backroads mapbook, topo, and satellite on it but it does cost ($40ish).

I was going to get my ZJ a new windshield, was recommended Roadrunner. They come to you, you can call and see if he goes to Victoria.
Jonathan is spot on. I always have an urge to find out what's down every turn. Planning it out can help alleviate some of that.
Another couple places to explore up by me are Nanaimo Lakes and NW Logging Bay Road.
