I was out on that loop trail today with a couple buddies and it is totally overgrown. Alders getting jammed up in roof racks and breaking stuff. I ended up needing to plug a front tire too. Turned around less than halfway through. Went back in onto tugwell main and kept going up and up. Nearly to tugwell lake, we turned around by the concrete barrier because we were running low on daylight. Roads and trails were all very passable and enjoyable in that spot! Looking forward to going back and making it to the lake and exploring further as time allows
The Backroads Map book of course! Available from most gas stations, many bookstores. Has loads of information regarding logging roads, parks, campgrounds, waterfalls, caves, big trees, rivers lakes fishing paddling the list goes on and on. A bargain at $25 or so
From port Renfrew you could take logging roads up to lake cowichan such as Gordon main. Lots to explore off of that road. From there I would detour to carmanah walbran for at least a couple hours exploring the amazing forest. Then I'd cruise on out to bamfield, still all on gravel roads. Bamfield has a marine research station and amazing beaches. From there you can drive to port alberni, on gravel, then you gotta hit the highway to tofino. That highway is an adventure in itself, and lots of cool side shoots to explore if you have time. Get the back roads mapbook from almost any gas station
I would definitely recommend the Duncan area. Mt Prevost, Mt Sicker, Hill 60 are all very accessible and have a ton of stuff to explore from mild to wild. My experiences in Spoke have been gates all over
