I see a few new faces around here so I thought I'd offer up my services as noob guide extraordinaire for anyone who wants to come out for an easy/beginner run. My truck is functional again after what seems like forever and I want to do a few moderate runs to make sure everything stays together before I start beating on it again.
**EDIT** This has become the difficult trail run thread. Stockers see http://www.vioffroad.com/forum/trail-runs/easy-stock-run-monday-feb-9th
If any of you seasoned wheelers want to meet up as well let's do it! just keep in mind you may be towing my broke ass out if it doesn't hold together.. hah!
What's everyone's days looking like this month?
HEY HE'S ALIVE!!!
Sundays are still good for me and I'm always happy to come out your way. Good to see you're back on the trails.
im in. weekends are good.
Cool - should we plan something for this weekend? Is it worth splitting into two days, one for easy wheeling, one for hard, or is everyone cool with just doing an easy overall route and the harder wheelers can do a few detours?
I wouldn't mind bombing down past Cowichan lake and seeing if we can get some altitude - it's been a while since I've been out that way.
what ever you guys think, i just wanna get out there.
I might be able to get out on Monday seeing as it's a holiday now. I only have my stock sidekick to run so easy would be good.
I work Saturday this week, so it would have to be Sunday / Monday. For me Shane, and I'm not discriminating but it's a bit of a treck for me so I would like to do some more challenging trails. I really liked the route we did last time. Also I'm still waiting for you to make the trip to Nanaimo so I can show you some "Real" trails lol.
Anyways let me know if you're going to do a 2 day event or not, if not I may pass this time because as you know....my jeep really doesn't like highway speeds and if we are just going to do FSR than it's not really worth the risk. Hopefully the stockers aren't offended. Let me know either way I just may make the trip anyways.
Makes sense to me Larry, I don't know that I'd drive my built rig down there to just run FSR.
Fuck yah buddy! I'm down for Sunday/ monday! into doing new trails anything moderate to difficult as I will be childless & wifeless... My shit is trail tested this time I wont be limping her halfway in this time! In time Larry I will be ready to venture more than 10KM down the high way but right now my PHB is kinda just botched in there and needs some love on the lower mount.... and I understand about the risks of travelling fast in a wheeler..
Alright cool - so let's plan for a moderate to difficult wheel on Sunday, and then a light / stock trip on Monday (assuming my truck survives)!
Does that work for everyone?
sounds good.
so what are people thinking for destinations and routes? I would like to put some miles on and not just stop at every spot we come across... I know its nice for people new to an area.... but can we try keeping on the trail if were gonna do a long distance trip like in behind LC...
I'm good with that, I don't like stopping at every view point either, the more trail I cover the happier I am.
I don't know of any great technical wheeling spots out past Cowichan lake - I was thinking that would be the Monday trip which would be longer distance and more logging roads / exploring. That's also where I think we can get some nice views, and maybe get into some snow?
For Sunday we could do the Sicker backside route through the clay pits and past the hillclimbs etc. I think that's what you're wanting to do Larry? Otherwise we could go check out Skutz falls because I've been told there is some hard wheeling out there but I've never actually been, so we'd be doing some searching.
Anyone have any other ideas?
I vote skutz falls. once your up there the roads open up depending on how many people we get here I have a decent trail on koksilah ridge needs some busting thru... and I know of a virgin gravel pit by lois lake.
I know that they have logged alot up there and the Red balls Dug outs are filled in and gone. but we could always build some new lines, besides that I cant stand rince repeating the sicker trails.. they've been the same for 10 years.. I will just say there pretty old.. ....
could try for reignheart again? the main trail is a bunch of technical shit from what I understand. there is a downed ww2 aircraft as well not that I know where it is, maybe a better run for two or three rigs till we know a route..
Im in.
Awesome - yea Sicker was getting a little too familiar for me as well as it's a pretty small area. So we'll check out Skutz falls and do some exploring.
Anyone else joining in? I should really set up some sort of site-wide email notification for these runs.
im in for monday. haven't been wheeling in 10+ years, plus i wanna wait for some supporting mods to be installed before i start breaking stuff.lol
Rob unlimited frn on here might join us as well as pindunderjeep... We will see. .. As for routes I know there is somethjijng punched thru at the top of the climb and that we can punch that trail, that I was talking about, thru as a quader had cut his way thru last time I was up there. Its one of those places where there are over grown road/ game trails that could turn into fun stuff , but we will have to be cautious as i suppose for all of us jamming five trucks up a one way dead end isn't ideal if fun.. So we shall see
Sounds good Brad
Anyone else for Monday? Myself and FarmYard for sure. ToyZuki you in as well?
I should be in, I have a few sick kids at home today so it will depend a bit on how they are doing. How long are we looking at being out and when/where do you want to meet?
Up to you guys, it'll just be a small group so we can play it by ear and quit when everyone's done. I'm good for any amount of time really.
As for a meeting place, how about the tempo gas station on tansor? Map link
I assume this is where the Sunday crew will be meeting as well. Say around 10-11am?
I can be there for 10:30ish...Welshy may be coming to depending on weather on the coast, I think he's hoping to go surfing but if the wind isn't going to be blowing I think he's going to join us.
yah i was hoping to meet between 9-10.. hitting the trail by noon just seams a little late however i suppose if our friens from nanimo are joining us then I can wait
sounds good. mabey two new threads so there is no confusion?
Good call FarmYard. This will become the difficult run thread and I've created another thread for the stock run here: http://www.vioffroad.com/forum/trail-runs/easy-stock-run-monday-feb-9th
I can probably make it for 10:00a.m. just waiting to hear from Gwyn. I'll let you know as soon as I know.
Just spoke to Welshy and we'll be there for 10:00a.m.
10am works for me - see you guys there
so I've been told that almost all of the red balz obstacles are gone but proving grounds are still there. and I have a couple areas I think we could play around in once were up there but its speculation as I haven't tried getting off the FSR and building a new route up there. its only been a few months since I was up behind lois lake I know the last trail we will hit should be a good one and when we bust thru we should be in and around another decent wheeling spot I haven't been to in a long time.
I cant edit maps and add highlighted routes any more cause i rooted and changed my tab so I am unable to share an idea of what i was thinking..
being that were gonna have 4- 7 rigs if every one shows I hope to keep us moving so every one can have some fun but I encourage all of you to play around if we get stopped in a forward motion.. ...
from what I remember it was about a 20- 30 minute jaunt from up by proving grounds to the gravel pit where the last trail starts. we will need to start this while its still light out so if we b line there at 200-300 we should have some time to get to the big obstruction and I will personally plow threw that to clear it up for the rest of yah. unless the quaders trail looks nicer of course.. if this goes over we should exit the bush around the Kinsole area in the south valley
Sounds like fun, as long as we don't spend the day travelling FSRs I'm a happy wheeler. See you all 10ish.
If I wasn't certain that we can "have some fun" we wouldn't be going up there. But the last line should be a good run
That makes me a little wet. 0:
well I hope you boys had fun, sorry for getting us turned around. I just knew we were all stressed for gas needed an exit. the straightes one possible... hard to do at 700m. I know it was a bit more FSR than you care for. Just means I need to get out more and explore this side of things and get a better route developed.. and fix my spring and pitman arm and come your way next time!
Anyone get any pics? I need to live vicariously through you.
On the plus side, I found a new axle housing and control arms in Van and the guy is willing to ship it here.
We put a lot of k's on man I'm sure matt and Larry got a few pics but but i didnt grab any from him yet. we were pretty inclined to keep moving.. Made a decent trip of it. Was a long day especially after the hour I cost us trying to find a short way down. Hope to get my spring fixed at work in the flatener tonight if I can pull it today.
Ya we had a great day, I got some pictures but not very many as I'm terrible at taking pictures and a lot of them didn't turn out so well. I'll post em up shortly.
