One of the tools I like to use when virtual scouting or route planning is the local regional online natural areas atlasses.
They pretty much use the same satellite imagery as Google Maps except the image set is selectable and in some places that is actually better.
Not only do these online mapping applications have decent imagery for most areas, they include several selectable GIS layers that can identify private land parcels, resource road designations and a few other useful geographic information types to help you plan, scout and avoid any unintended incursion in to private land.
You can easily spend hours messing around with these things and I have found them for other regions as well, like the Okanagan and Fraser Valley etc.
Here is the one for the CRD. https://maps.crd.bc.ca/Html5Viewer/?viewer=public
Note that the orthophoto layer has a minimum zoom requirement when selected in order to be displayed.
There is also some overlap between the Cowichan region as well but there is a separate atlas for that region.
Here is the online map site for the Cowichan Valley Regional District. https://www.cvrd.bc.ca/2025/Maps-GIS
Just click on the "Launch the interactive web map" link on the page to start it up.
I would post a link directly to the map but if the port number changes the link breaks so it's best just to start it from the launch page.
I haven't looked for the ones further up island yet but if nobody else beats me to it, I will try to find everything that covers up to Campbel River too.
Right now I'm still focused on planning a few trail runs while I'm (hoping to be) in the Okanagan on vacation for a week in June...
Hadn't seen that first one before - man Victoria has some high res aerial photos! Wish we had that level of detail in the cvrd.
