I’m also a newbie to off-roading, and have had some fun exploring the logging roads off Pacific Marine Rd and in the Hill 60 Ridge area (start here, and then explore! https://goo.gl/maps/Au34uHtxEpUqJqYT6 ) They’re easy, but have a few wash outs and ruts to practice on. One warning though, Pacific Marine Rd has no cell service, so go with a buddy. I’m always up for a drive, if you do go out! Cheers.
if you're near nanaimo, both spruston and the timberland mud pits are pretty easy. i took my jeep up spruston the first time i put it into 4x4 and had a good time.
The Hill 60 area is a great way to start off. Seems to be the go to recommendation. Lots of offshoots too.
I'd definitely recommend going with a friend, going with a friend who has recovery gear is definitely a good idea and if you don't - be smart, and buy a backroads map book! It's about $30 and will really help.
I recommend posting on the site and see if people are available. Met some great people that way.

Thank you very much think I might do some social distancing up there this weekend.
