I bought a basically new Backroad Mapbook from the secondhand shop for $8 and betwen this and Google earth I've managed to find a few places to go.
I'm the same as you in being new to the area
I’ll check out some shops around Sooke area and try to pick one up. I’ve found some trails in Port Alberni. I might check them out in a week. I see you’re from Nanaimo, I pass through there to goto Comox. Maybe go for a trail ride sometime!
I’m in the same boat. Can’t seem to find many trails. I do see a lot of muddy 4x4’s around, so they are out there. Unfortunately your not going to get directions from this site... for all the right reasons I guess. But it is frustrating.
Just did a quick day run over and around Sicker mountain. Tons of evidence that there are many small minded mental midgets out there who can’t keep their crap/garbage in their vehicles until they get home. If you’re too stupid to realize what you are doing, please stay out of the woods!!

Yes defiantly, I have a stock Durango at the moment but I'd love to go out
The reservoir just off Jordan river is pretty nice. Easy trail but you can get right into the dam which is cool to walk around.

There has been a large # of trail cam place up MT Sicker and Pervost people dumping there trash are getting caught .............
