Hey All,
I'm new and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Tony and I just moved back to Victoria after about 13 years away.
A few years ago, I bought myself a 1999 Isuzu VehiCross. It was a short production run from the late '90's. Less than 6,000 of these were delivered worldwide.

I've always wanted to take it out on some backcountry trails and now that I'm back on the Island, there isn't a better time to start.
And that's the thing. Not sure where to start. I don't know any of the rules about driving on logging roads etc... I'm reading the forum pretty intensely right now, but if someone is going out on the weekend for a run that might be good for new guy, I'd love to tag along.
Cheers,
Tony
I saw you driving just the other day and have never seen a truck like that before, so I remembered! The island is a tricky place to explore, as a huge amount of the back country on the south island is "privately owned" and we are "trespassing" by using their roads and simply being on their lands. That being said, many roads are open and you are typically fine to travel on them. It's a good idea to have a VHF radio and have it tuned to the posted logging company channels. Not totally necessary though, I don't have one. Drive slowly on the logging roads, don't outdrive your safe braking distances and watch out for all other traffic, especially logging trucks. Logging trucks can take up the whole damn road, and are not as maneuverable or easy to stop. Give them the right of way, no screwing around. Get safely out of their way and proceed cautiously. You'll get used to it in no time.
Always pack food and water, have a good spare tire and tell people where you plan to go and when you plan to be back, in case you get stuck or broken down. Better is to go out with another vehicle.
Buy the backroad mapbook from nearly any bookstore or gas station. That'll give you lots of ideas and places to begin.
There are lots of cool areas to explore and amazing wilderness here on our island. Pack out more garbage than you bring in, respect gates and you shouldn't have problems with logging companies. If you want to find the really cool stuff, you'll have to join up with some more experienced people and go on trail runs with them.
I've seen two different VehiCross' around Nanaimo, pretty neat!
Hey welcome to vioffroad - you've got a pretty unique vehicle there!
Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out here for runs I can go out on!
welcome to the forum! ive seen one other one of those before haha, looks funky and cool, would be interested in knowing what it can do!
That’s a cool vehicle! Perfect for a lot of island wheeling, being small, with not a lot of overhang. What size tires are on that? It’s hard to tell from the pics. Next time I’m going out, I’ll drop you a note.
I'll check the tires before I go to work tomorrow.
For sure let me know next time you're heading out. Baby steps tough ;-)
hey cool lookin rig would like to see what she can do offroad, what are the specs on motor you got a limited slip in rear?
