It's funny, the article says it's south west of the lake, but I just happen to know of an area that looks identical to that south east of the lake. maybe they haven't discovered my spot yet, or maybe they're giving faulty directions to throw you off the trail! :)
I wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to throw people off the trail. The article says its down a logging road and beside a salmon bearing creek. After referencing my backroads map book I figure it must be down gordon river main somewhere.
I'm going to go do some exploring on Saturday and see if I can find it. If anyone wants to come you're more than welcome.
Its on Caycuse main off Southshore road. Left side of Caycuse main.
Those Ancient Forest Alliance people hang the carrot all the time. "oh we found a huge tree" the location with remain secret though.
They found a huge Douglas Fir they named Big Lonely Doug. they never told anyone where it is located.
I found it about 1 year ago by accident. It was on the opposite side of a Valley I was on picking berries. One day Ill head down the pother side of valley to go see it. It has a large clear-cut around it and it was left probably as a natural seed tree.
Thanks a lot for the info! You sure hit the nail on the head describing those Ancient Forest Alliance folk haha.
I've been to the big lonely doug and it's pretty impressive. More so than the larger red creek fir just because it's in a clear cut and you can truly see how big it is.
I'm waiting for some nicer weather and then I'm going to go check out the big trees in the carmanah walbran
I just did the car Carmanah Walbran last Saturday, completely worth it, it's only about 3 hours hike both directions. Also if you actually research big lonely Doug ,it gives you exact directions, co-orditances if you really need too, as well as Avatar Grove...Easy find easy hike! If your going to the Walbran I highly recommend you check out the cheewhat cedar on your way, although if you couldn't find big lonely Doug much as though stumble upon it then it might be too hard for you, it is worth it though as the whole Valley bottom is filled with giant trees. Good luck there are signs to the Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park
Thanks Lancer, I did head out there in time to reach Botanical Beach just before sunrise. Then headed out to Avatar, Big Doug and then on to find Mossy Maples near Caycuse. Got to the pub in Lk. Cow just in time to watch the sunset.
Carmanawalbran is an amazing place, both the northern area with the true park by nitmat lake and the southern end. There's some seriously impressive trees and board walks there.
get on the North Shore logging road past Youbou

Thanks for the reply but thats not what I'm looking for.
then why don't you explain what you are looking for because Maple Grove is about 40 minutes past Lake Cowichan if you drive the speed limit
I'm looking for this

That looks extremely cool.
I'm surprised Shane hasn't commented, he's pretty familiar with that area.

I'd like to head out to these Mossy Maples tomorrow. Can anyone give me more details on where to find the spot? Maybe GPS coordinates? Thanks, Todd
