Hey Everyone,
First post here - Been following this forum for years but decided it's time to sign up and hope to meet some of you out on the trail!
I had an interesting run in yesterday at 2nd gate on old Renfrew road. There was a gent parked there (gate was open), didn't look too official, didn't see any timberwest/ fish & game/ Province of BC logos or stickers. He approached the truck and said access is now cut off on weekends to the general public - He said the gate took 30+ shotgun rounds and that's why it's now blocked. In 5 - 6 years being out there I've never experienced that but wondering if you guys have heard anything.
I left a message with Timberwest but haven't heard back. Has anyone on here heard anything?

If I had an experience like that I would have asked the guy for his ID or see some paperwork before listening to a word he said. Sounds like someone was up to no good up there and just didn't want anyone else around at the time. If the gate is open and it's not actively being worked there's no need to post a guy at the gate to turn people away. Chances are you were better off steering clear of whatever TF was going on there anyway by the sound of it. God knows what some people are up to out there...
The gate probably took 30+ shots because it was closed already. Somebody may have been stuck on the other side or just pissed off at the closure and letting someone know about it. 30 shots to an open gate is unlikely and certainly not a rational excuse to close it. It is getting hard to find ways into our wilderness on the south island.

wow thats brutal...only once have i seen a guy posted at a gate, was in sooke. Old man in a truck, came up to us pretty pissy ( gate was closed and we hadnt even crossed it haha, was just looking) but yea fairly rare. I do agree with rob though, definitely would have asked for ID and check to see if its legit, even if it would have been better to not get in there, atleast theres confirmation thats its true
Was the old Pissy guy in sooke on Anderson Rd? If so I have run into him a couple of times.

A couple years ago there was people collecting a $2.00 fee at the Nanaimo lakes entrance. I declined giving them money but they still wanted me to check in/out which is fine.

I guess, seemed odd to me. I love exploring out by Green Mountain but it's almost always locked up at 2nd lake on nice days.
ah yea thats brutal gates are just everywhere, never been up there!
