Hello all.... just got a new to me f350 and I'm looking for someone to show me a few trails to test out the 4x4. I got about a 4in lift and some sort of aggressive tires, no winch. I was hoping someone would be free to lead me around next weekend(apr 30/may1 2016) Anyone interested in showin a newbie around?
P.S. I'm in Saanichton/Brentwood Bay but willing to come up Island if that's where all the good places are
That's a pretty big truck. You'll have to stick to logging roads. There's still lots of nice places you could hit up and explore.
There's a few saved gps routes here on the forum. You could download a few and check out some spots.
Thx. I was hoping someone could show me a few more rugged places than the loggin roads. Was going through some of the pics in the gallery that look pretty cool to check out. Also don't like to head out alone in unfamiliar territory, especially without a winch.
Still looking for someone to go exploring with this weekend. I don't really want to go out alone, as I'm not familiar with the area and terrain. Is there no one available or willing to show me around? I'm not scared of a few scratches or a little dirt. Also a few hints as to what to bring along, i.e.: tow straps, extra fuel, planks, most likely part to break that might be changeable on the fly, or just any helpful advice for my new pastime of 4x4 exploring.
Like was said above, thats a big truck! And pretty much all the trails you see in the pictures were at one point less that 8 ft wide or was a quad trail.... you stick to the loggin roads maybe take it to the slag piles and claypitts in dunan but otherwise you probably wont have much for takers on leading you around being that any group with you will be stuck to the larger easier path. Also none of us would be able to tug that thing out once stuck without possibly causing damage to our own rigs. Hope you find someone to take you out, as of last week my rig is going under the knife.
There are lots of photos of full size pickups going to some cool places....I find it hard to believe these are logging road pics but if they are then cool I'll check them out also. There must be other members who have full size trucks like mine that go out. These are the folks my quiry was more directed to. I wasn't looking to go out with a little toy jeep that would fit in my box, you're right you would never get me unstuck. Am I on the wrong site? Is there a 4x4 site more geared to my rig?
There are definitely some nice spots you can find with a full size - they will be mostly off logging roads and powerline roads, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I would show you around but my truck has been out of commission for a ridiculous length of time now..
It's true that many of the seasoned wheelers will want to stick with other smaller vehicles, as otherwise it limits where they can go. In fact, I've been with groups where my 4runner is the big one and I'm cursing at the suzukis and trackers who can go down the trails I can't (the key to that you'll find is simply smashing your way through, but not if you value your body panels). That said, there are a number of members on the site here with bigger vehicles, so I'm sure a good run can be put together. You can find some great easy access spots just by heading down past Cowichan lake on the gravel, or in chemainus valley through the gates.
Anyway, welcome to the site and to exploring in general - hope you find a good run soon. Post some pictures of your truck on top of a mountain when you get there to show these naysayers what's up ;)
Thx for the encouragement, & I most definitely will. I'm new to the area so not really sure exactly where u mean but I'll try to find.
So it's Saturday morning & still no takers on a guide for the newbie. I don't like going out alone in unfamiliar territory so instead I'll do the loop on my motorcycle. With a weeks notice I was hoping to get a few people interested in exploring with me this weekend but I guess my truck is too big to hang with the majority of folks on this site. Must say I'm a little disappointed. You probably won't see many more posts from me. Thx & have a great safe weekend all.
It's too bad that you are feeling left out, unfortunately though I'm not interested in driving FSR for any length of time. My rig is built to go down goat paths and that's what I enjoy doing. Have you tried sending a PM to some of our users that drive bigger trucks.
Throwing a hissy fit and acting like "Fine I'm taking my ball and leaving" probably won't make you any friends, you need to understand that people don't come to this forum daily, sometimes I'm a couple weeks between logins and I'm not the only one.
A suggestion for you, maybe go to a local gas station in your area and pickup a "Backroad maps" book, it's a very good resource for people looking to go exploring in the back country, as stated above there are a whole lot of places you can access in your truck and a map book will show you the way.
Give it some time. Majority of us here don't check the forum daily. As mentioned before there is few people here on the site that have bigger rigs. Im sure a run could be set up.
Also most of us started just like you not knowing any trails. Good start as mentioned is to pick up a Backroad maps book. Just go out and explore. If you dont think you can get over an obstacle then dont try it. Turn back and try another road.
We all went out on our own a few times. Just know your limits. You'll discover a lot of cool spots yourself.
Backroads maps book and google earth. I suggest starting at hillcrest 60.
Yea like others said a full Size f350 won't go to most places that members on here like.to go on. Take it from me I have a double cab long bed Tacoma, and I come up with tons of issues left and right with trails, and my truck is still smaller than yours. Like beer n meat said, we also don't log on so often. Get a hold of a backroads mapbook, try exploring some areas like past youbou and skutz falls...reality of it is most you will fit is logging roads
I like my big truck, yes it doesn't fit in tight spaces but the long wheelbase makes it a good climber. I ride in style and comfort. It'll haul anything in or out of the bush. Logging roads are ok and some of the off chutes can be fun. I have seen quite a few big 4 door 4x4 f350,dodge3500,chev3500's around covered in mud and looking well used. Where are these guys going I wonder? Guess I should chase one of these guys down & ask them. Thx everyone for the suggestions, & I'll definitely be checking some of these places out but I'll be looking for something more challenging than a logging road.
sounds good! doesnt matter what you drive, as long as your having a good time :)
Youd be surprised where I can cram my stock half tonne, a lifted F350 is probably much more capable than that. Its smart to bring a winch or a friend for when you high-center (which you will do). My usually strategy is momentum and wheelspin, but I dont really value my paint so that may not be an option for you. I havent really been down to Victoria much, but theres a few good areas for full sizes around Cowichan lake, I spend most of my time in the Nanaimo Lakes area though.
I'd be willing to come up island to go exploring with you. I would rather go out with another truck than alone. Getting stuck without help miles in the bush is no fun.(talking from experience, lol) I am always more cautious when by myself as to not get stuck or break something, sometimes this limits my exploration.
that truck makes a good anchor point! LoL ... there is definately some cool places to get to nothing to extreme i had a 99 f350 CC LB and i went everywhere i could. Out around lake cowichan area there is some spots at the end of the lake out towards nit nat area
I am in Langford and am also new to the area. I would like to explore the Sooke area, but don't where to go. I have a Mog, so size is an issue... Any ideas? crossing the Malahat is not a problem except I am usually deaf by Mill Bay so I prefer the Sooke side.
Have a good weekend all.
That's two of us that need a big truck, let's explore cool places guide. Lol Count me in when someone wants to volunteer their guide services.
Dont know how or where they are getting in but there has been a very steady flow of muddy traffic coming through from west of Sooke this weekend and lots were your size or bigger. I didnt have time to get my X out this weekend but will be out sniffing around next weekend for the access. Seems like up past Sooke might be opening up again?
Want to go May 6? I know of a spot near Shawnigan lake.
Do you mean June 6...Monday? Then yes probably. Where, when do you want to meet up?
