Need help with jeep front end rebuild

Hi all,

We are in Duncan BC and are rebuilding the front end on a 1986 Jeep Cherokee. It has turned into a much bigger and more expensive job than we anticipated and we need some help. At this point, we need to remove the external threaded castleated adjuster that is highlighted in white in the photo. It is threaded into the steering yolk. We have tried soaking it in WD40 without luck. If somebody has an acetelyne torch to heat up the steering yolk, I think that is the only chance we have of removing it. We are way over budget on this and must now rely on the kindness of strangers to get this done.

We are having trouble installing the ball joints as well. The ball joint press we rented is too big for the upper joints. If anyone has a smaller press for the uppers that we could borrow, we'd appreciate that as well.

Thanks in advance for any help, advice or comments. Barb.

I'm confused with the term "Steering yoke" any chance of posting a picture of said part?
The only thing I can think of is the Steering u-joint but that part highlighted doesn't look familiar.

I will upload a picture of the "yoke" as soon as I get one. Thanks for your reply. Barb.

Barb, where are you and do you still have the bj press. Its shouldnt be too big. They are usually one size and have different cups for each bj size. Also confuzed about steering yoke, looks like you are talking about a tie rod end? Might be able to help or advise you. Leave me a numer and an address and could try to stop by today.

I hope these pictures will explain more clearly what we need to do. We have to get the sleeve (bushing?) out of the yoke and install the new one because the ball joint shaft was wearing out and causing a "klunk". Thanks again. Barb.

Hi, BeRadical,

There is a utube video that mentions the smaller press but I can't find it right now. If I come across it again, I'll let you know.

The press was a rental. The cups were the right size but when the press is installed on the top ball joint, the top of the press bolt was almost touching the inner top of the fender and it was up against the coil spring. Almost impossible to get a straight strong pull on it.

Unless the taper in that split ring in the bottom of the knuckle (yolk) is worn out i wouldnt worry about it.. if you must get it out due to it being worn... then loads of penatrant a vise a drift and a hammer should be alle to walk it out.. possibly need heat aswell.
